Germany Weighs Near-Total Ban on Flights from Morocco Amid COVID Variant Concerns

Faced with new variants of the coronavirus, Germany is considering reducing to almost nothing flights departing from Morocco and other countries to its territory. Horst Seehofer, the Interior Minister, made this announcement on Tuesday, January 26.
"The danger posed by the different virus mutations requires that we examine and discuss drastic measures within the government," he told the Bild newspaper. Among these measures, "stricter border controls, particularly with areas considered to be at very high risk, but also the reduction of air traffic to Germany to almost nothing, as Israel is currently doing," the minister said.
"The population, which is accepting significant restrictions in Germany" in these times of Covid, "expects us to protect them as best we can from an explosion in the number of cases," added Mr. Seehofer.
As of January 25, 2021, the Covid-19 report in Germany shows 2,161,543 cases of contamination and 53,958 deaths. The country is facing a deadlier second wave.
