Germany Seeks to Mend Diplomatic Rift with Morocco Amid Contact Suspension

Germany is trying to play the appeasement card following Morocco’s decision to suspend all contact, interaction or action with both its embassy in Rabat and the German cooperation agencies and political foundations.
The Moroccan ambassador has been summoned for an urgent audience at the State Secretariat of the Federal Foreign Office regarding the decision of the Moroccan diplomatic authorities, reports Maghreb-Post. Heiko Maas, head of German diplomacy, would have stated that "Germany sees no reason to compromise the good diplomatic relations with Morocco". A statement that sounds like an appeasement following the kingdom’s decision.
On Monday, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, sent an official letter to the Head of Government and other members of the government calling on them to suspend all contact with "the German Embassy in Morocco" "due to deep misunderstandings with the Federal Republic of Germany on the fundamental issues of the Kingdom of Morocco".
The points of friction are, among others, Germany’s position on the Sahara, its interference in Morocco’s internal affairs and the exclusion of Rabat from negotiations on the future of Libya during a conference organized in Berlin in January 2020.
