Germany Nominates New Ambassador to Morocco Amid Diplomatic Tensions

While the diplomatic rift between Germany and Morocco persists, Berlin has decided to appoint a new diplomat to head its embassy in Rabat.
Germany is rushing to appoint a new ambassador to Rabat. Appointed in 2017, the current ambassador Götz Schmidt-Bremme will be replaced by Thomas Peter Zahneisen, reports Africa Intelligence. The German authorities have already submitted this proposal for the appreciation of the Moroccan authorities. If the latter give a favorable response, the new ambassador could go to Morocco as early as June. A career diplomat, Götz Schmidt-Bremme is the current director of humanitarian assistance at the German Foreign Ministry. He has served at the permanent representation to the United Nations in New York, as well as in Paris and Kabul.
Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, had sent an official letter to the Head of Government and other members of the government on March 1st, calling on them to suspend "any contact, interaction or action both with its embassy in Rabat and with German cooperation agencies and political foundations" due to the deep misunderstandings with the Federal Republic of Germany on the fundamental issues of the kingdom.
It remains to be seen whether this decision to replace the ambassador would help reduce diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
