Gendarmes' Lawyers Challenge Drug Trafficker's Bribery Claims in Casablanca Court

At a first hearing at the Casablanca Court of Appeal on Tuesday, the lawyers of several gendarmes accused of corruption highlighted the contradictions in the statements of the drug trafficker Mohamed S., who claims to have paid them bribes to facilitate his illicit activities.

Lawyer Khalid Fakerni, representing the accused Rachid S., a former gendarme in Beni Mellal, confounded Mohamed S. He presented substantial evidence showing that his client was no longer in office at the time the suspicions were raised against him. He also exposed the contradictions between the drug trafficker’s statements and the documents presented in court.

According to the reports of the judicial police, "Mohamed S. would have declared having handed over a sum of money to Rachid S. on a date when the latter was on leave in the city of Essaouira, while the gendarme had left his post the previous January," reports Hespress. According to the lawyer, the drug trafficker had mentioned vague transactions over a 15-day period, thus excluding the veracity of his accusations. Testimonies also prove the innocence of Hicham A., another gendarme also mentioned in the case and currently in detention.

Information indicating alleged complicity in drug trafficking in the Béni Mellal region led to the arrest of 37 gendarmes from Béni Mellal and neighboring regions. The drug trafficker was the subject of dozens of national arrest warrants. He was finally arrested on the firm instructions of the Attorney General of the King.
