Garbage Strike Looms in Casablanca Ahead of Eid al-Adha Celebrations

With the approach of Eid al-Adha, the Casablanca metropolis risks being buried under piles of garbage. The garbage collectors threaten to strike on August 8 and 9, with the possibility of extending it if the authorities do not respond to their requests.
For a month now, the garbage collectors’ union (UMT) has been brandishing the threat of a strike, postponed several times, in the city of Casablanca. This time, things are getting complicated, and the garbage collectors seem determined to go all the way, at the risk of plunging the city into filth during the Eid period.
Protesting against the City Council and the two delegated companies, Averda and Derichebourg, the union leaders are demanding a salary increase and the settlement of the situation of municipal agents.
According to the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, the officials of the Wilaya of Greater Casablanca are trying to dissuade the garbage collectors from starting the strike, by holding discussions likely to respond to the requests of those concerned.
