Fuel Stations in Morocco Face Crisis as Coronavirus Lockdown Empties Pumps

The fuel distribution sector has been in the doldrums since the lockdown was ordered to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Customers are scarce and the cash registers are desperately empty.

Service stations are among the sectors of activity that have continued to operate despite the state of health emergency. "Service stations continue to operate normally. Our duty to our homeland means that we can only brave the danger to contribute to the energy security of the kingdom," assures Fedwa Ahmar Legroun, member of the National Federation of Free Service Station Owners, Merchants and Managers. But that doesn’t mean customers are rushing to be served.

Since the state of health emergency came into effect, "the limitation of urban and inter-city travel has led to a sharp drop in fuel and ancillary services consumption." As a result, service stations "have seen their turnover drop by more than 80%, and have had to reduce their workforce in order to reduce costs.

In addition, the managers of some sales outlets claim that they have taken all the necessary measures to protect the pump attendants from the coronavirus by providing them with hydroalcoholic gels and others.
