Frustrated by Mohamed Ouahbi’s choice, Tarik Sektioui leaves Morocco for Oman

The 48-year-old technician officially took charge of the Omani national team this Sunday, March 22, succeeding Portuguese Carlos Queiroz. However, the exact duration of his new contract has not been specified by the local federation.

This signing abroad comes the day after his surprise resignation from the Moroccan governing body. He had just taken over the Olympic selection with a view to the next continental competition and the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

This sudden departure barely conceals the deep disillusionment of the national cadre. Tipped to succeed Walid Regragui, he finally saw the officials of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) entrust the first team to Mohamed Ouahbi, chosen for his tactical rigor and his recent world title with the U20s. A resounding record swept away by disappointment.

This decision has pushed out a coach with an exceptional record. He recently offered the country an unprecedented bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Games, won the African Nations Championship in Kenya, and then the Arab Cup in Qatar with the A’ team.

Politely refusing local approaches, including an offer from Wydad of Casablanca, currently second in the league, he preferred to go abroad. He is reunited with an Omani selection that he had indeed faced and held in check during the group stage of the Arab Cup.
