French Schools in Morocco Delay Opening, Sparking Parent Protests

The decision of the French Embassy in Morocco to postpone the school start to October 1st is not to the liking of parents and associations, who say they were caught off guard. Sit-in and open letter are recorded this Friday to protest and demand a change in the school calendar with face-to-face classes.

Most do not understand the reasons given by the embassy, which published the new school calendar for the network of French establishments in Morocco on Thursday.

This Friday, a sit-in was organized in front of the Molière school to protest against the glitches of this back-to-school. Some parents expressed their wish to see the courses take place in person with a rearrangement of the calendar to catch up on the delay and allow schooling in the best conditions. "Without vaccination being a condition," said one of the demonstrators to H24info.

For their part, the parents of students affiliated with the Union of Parents’ Councils (UCPE) have written a letter of protest to react vehemently to the embassy’s announcement.

The co-presidents of the UCPE, Hayat Nassif and Moulay Driss Alaoui, signatories of this letter, estimated that there was no question of losing time in the learning of their child(ren) and that "in the meantime, the establishments will offer students and their families a distance learning continuity based on contact activities, knowledge and method reviews or upgrading".

The signatories explain that the announcement of the French embassy has caused "strong emotion and anger within the educational community in all the hubs of Morocco".
