French Retirees Embrace Extended Stay in Morocco Amid COVID-19 Lockdown

A retired couple from Champfleur (Sarthe) is stuck in Morocco since the implementation of the lockdown in the kingdom. Their release will only come with the lifting of the lockdown measure.

On May 20, Jean-Claude, 73, and Odile, 72, both retired from Champfleur, may be able to leave their motorhome in Morocco. They have been stuck there since the implementation of the lockdown measure decreed as part of the fight against covid-19 by Morocco. They are living this situation without much anxiety, which they describe as a bonus of their vacation. They should have left Morocco on April 12 by ferry to Spain, then return home by road, Odile explained. But for several weeks, the two retirees know that this is no longer possible before the end of May. Jean-Claude and Odile commend Morocco for the rigorous management of the covid-19 crisis, particularly with regard to the measures taken, reports actu.fr.

Morocco officially records 3,568 cases of contamination, including 155 deaths and 456 recoveries as of April 23. The kingdom is therefore the third most affected country in Africa by covid-19, behind Egypt and South Africa. This has led to the implementation of the lockdown since mid-March. It should be noted that 3,000 foreign motorhomes are stuck in Morocco like that of these two retirees.

The two French feel safe in their place of confinement. People are taking care of them. Their care in the motorhome reassures them, especially since these two septuagenarians are considered at-risk people in the face of covid-19. Their only regret is not being able to go to the beach in these times of heat. The confinement does not seem to bother the two retirees who say they no longer have much desire to return to France.

Thanks to the internet, Jean-Claude and Odile have news from their country and exchange with their children. They are making new friends and sharing meals while strictly respecting health measures.
