French Poll Reveals Widespread Concerns About Islam's Compatibility with National Values

The issue of the veil and secularism was the subject of a vast IFOP poll commissioned by the Journal du Dimanche. This survey shows that a majority of French people say they are distrustful of Islam.

The issue of secularism is unleashing all tongues in France. For 61% of those surveyed, this question "arises differently in France with regard to the Muslim religion."

Regarding religion, 61% of those surveyed consider that "Islam is incompatible with the values of French society."

These results well express the unease raised by the issue. According to the same study, the French surveyed are also overwhelmingly in favor of banning street prayers (82%), and banning the wearing of religious symbols (cross, veil, kippah, etc.) for users of public services (75%), school trip chaperones (73%), and private sector employees (72%).

The same survey, on the other hand, supports that 61% of the French approve of substitute menus without pork in school canteens.

Regarding secularism, the people (78%) surveyed believe that it is currently threatened (35% "absolutely", 43% "rather").

Ten years earlier, only 58% felt that this issue of secularism was threatened. It was of more concern to RN sympathizers at 91%, Republicans at 85%, LREM at 79%, and the PS (64%).

However, the subject of secularism is not a priority for 39% of respondents, far behind health (first concern cited with 82%), the fight against unemployment, purchasing power, the fight against crime, environmental protection and the fight against Islamism.
