French Leaders Urge Macron to Condemn Islamophobia After Veil Incident

Wednesday 16 October 2019, by Sylvanus

The assault on a veiled woman accompanying her son to the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regional Council, on Friday, October 11, by Julien Odoul, an RN elected official, continues to cause waves. This time, it is 90 French personalities who have called on President Emmanuel Macron to end hatred against Muslims.

In an op-ed, these personalities from various backgrounds ask Emmanuel Macron to publicly condemn the assault this woman suffered in front of her own son.

Similarly, they asked him to "say, forcefully, that Muslim women, whether they wear the veil or not, and Muslims in general have their place in our society."

Moreover, President Emmanuel Macron is called upon to refuse that Muslim citizens be filed, stigmatized, denounced for the mere practice of their religion, and to solemnly demand that discrimination and amalgamation towards a part of the national community cease.

"Let us not be mistaken. The extreme right has made hatred against Muslims a major tool of its propaganda, but it does not have a monopoly on it. Members of the so-called republican right and left do not hesitate to stigmatize Muslims, often "in the name of secularism," the signatories of the op-ed deplored.

Furthermore, they pointed out that the legitimate emotion that should be expressed in public opinion is absent.
