French Interior Minister to Visit Morocco, Aiming to Mend Ties and Boost Security Cooperation

The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, plans to visit Morocco this month as the two countries try to overcome their diplomatic dispute that arose more than two years ago.
Thus, the French Minister of the Interior will be received by his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit, for a one-on-one discussion before the two parties hold an expanded working session covering various topics of common interest. This will be on Monday, April 22.
Darmanin should also address terrorism, migration and security cooperation for the Olympic Games in Paris. Morocco plans to send some experts for the sporting event.
This visit comes two months after Rabat and Paris officially resolved their diplomatic dispute over the Sahara.
While France initially supported Rabat’s autonomy plan in 2007, in recent years Paris has refrained from taking a clear position on the conflict, prioritizing efforts to improve relations with Algeria, a long-time adversary of Rabat and a supporter of the Polisario Front.
During his visit to Rabat last week, the French Minister of Foreign Trade, Franck Riester, said that the French Development Agency (AFD), through its private sector financing arm Proparco, could help finance projects in the region.
