Fraudulent ’Healer’ Sentenced for Blackmailing Women in Morocco

The Court of Appeal of Ouarzazate has confirmed the conviction of a 40-year-old man to two years in prison and a fine of four thousand dirhams for the illegal practice of witchcraft. The individual, who targeted vulnerable women, was also ordered to pay civil damages of the same amount to the civil party.
Accused of having photographed women in compromising situations under the pretext of healing them through "Roqya Charia", the man also promised to solve their personal problems. He then used these images to blackmail and extort money from his victims.
The case was revealed thanks to the complaints filed by several women with the court of first instance of Tinghir. The arrest of the individual allowed the authorities to discover a set of photos of women associated with talismans and other objects related to witchcraft.
Although the accused was acquitted of the charges of incitement to prostitution, unauthorized dissemination of photos and sexual harassment, he was found guilty of fraud and threats.
