Franco-Tunisian Fugitive Arrested in Morocco for Armed Robbery Charges

A Franco-Tunisian man wanted for his alleged involvement in a series of armed robberies in the Var region in 2017 was arrested last Friday, February 11, in Morocco. He has been detained pending extradition.
The Draguignan public prosecutor announced on Thursday that the 39-year-old suspect was arrested in Morocco after two years on the run. He had disappeared in October 2019, just a few weeks before the opening of his trial before the Var Assize Court. The court had sentenced him in absentia to 15 years in prison for "complicity in armed robberies", reports Nice Matin.

After his arrest in January 2018, the young man had been indicted and then released under judicial supervision. He was therefore prohibited from leaving the PACA region and had to report weekly to the nearest gendarmerie brigade. But on November 24, 2019, he disappeared. According to police sources, he would have boarded a ship bound for Nador from the port of Almeria.
Wanted by Interpol at the request of the French authorities, the fugitive will be extradited to France in the coming days and should be granted a new trial in case he contests the verdict handed down in his absence.
