Franco-Maghrebi Candidates Make Gains in French Legislative Elections

In France, the legislative elections are taking place on June 12 and 19, 2022. As in 2017, there are 15 Franco-Maghrebis to whom the French have granted their vote. This time, with a breakthrough of the left-wing alliance, NUPES.
Unlike 2017, the 15 Franco-Maghrebis are not all elected under the banner of LREM or the Modem, reports Le Courrier de l’Atlas. We note in 2022 a political diversity. On one side, the Ensemble! alliance (presidential majority) and the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (NUPES) on the other side. Eight of them are elected under the banner of Ensemble! Among them, six outgoing deputies. These are Fadila Khattabi (Côte d’Or), Belkhir Belhaddad (Moselle), Naïma Moutchou (Val d’Oise), Sarah El Hairy (Loire-Atlantique), Mohamed Laqhila (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Amal Amélia Lakrafi (East, Southern Africa and Middle East). The other two are new faces: Mounir Belhamiti (replacing François de Rugy in 2018) and Sabrina Agresti-Roubache, a Marseille TV producer and friend of the Macron couple, who defeated a National Rally candidate.
The seven other Franco-Maghrebis elected come from the bowels of NUPES, which has generally achieved good results for these legislative elections (131 elected candidates). They are all new deputies. These are Farida Amrani, known for having tried to defeat Manuel Valls in his stronghold of Evry; Sophia Chikirou, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s campaign communication director; Fatiha Keloua Hachi and Soumya Bourouaha elected in the Seine Saint-Denis department and Karim Ben Cheikh, the diplomat on leave who managed to defeat the Ensemble candidate and former minister, Elisabeth Moreno in the second round in the constituency covering the Maghreb and West Africa.
