France Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

France has reaffirmed its "unwavering" position on the Sahara issue, reiterating its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over this territory.
The Quai d’Orsay reiterates "the unwavering nature of France’s position" on the Sahara and its commitment to "act in accordance with this position both nationally and internationally." In a statement released Tuesday, following the meeting between Jean-Noël Barrot, French Minister of Foreign Affairs, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, the French minister reaffirmed "clear and constant support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty," considered as "the only basis" and the "only framework in which this issue should be resolved."
In his letter addressed to King Mohammed VI on July 30, 2024, President Emmanuel Macron had stated that "for France, the present and future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty," it is recalled. France welcomes the "increasingly broad international consensus" around the Moroccan autonomy proposal and renews its willingness "to support Morocco’s significant efforts in favor of economic and social development" in the Kingdom’s Southern provinces, concludes the statement.
