France Doubles Visas for Moroccans in 2022, Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

The number of visas granted to Moroccan nationals by France increased by 105.9% in 2022, from 69,408 to 143,000. But this increase masks a sharp decline compared to the 346,032 visas issued in 2019.
According to data from the French Ministry of the Interior, this trend is explained by the difficulties encountered in issuing visas for Algerians and Moroccans. These three countries, according to the French government, refused to issue the necessary consular laissez-passer for the return of their nationals expelled from France.
This visa crisis now seems to be resolved, following the recent decision by France to normalize its consular activities with Morocco, even if on the ground, many testimonies show that the situation persists.
Despite the decision to reduce the granting of visas, Moroccans are among the main beneficiaries of French visas, ahead of Algerians and Tunisians.
