Former Moroccan PM Urges Reopening of Morocco-Algeria Border After 26-Year Closure

One of the reasons that explains the tense situation between Morocco and Algeria is the closure of the land border between the two countries. For the former head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, this situation that has persisted for 26 years has lasted too long.
The former Moroccan head of government spoke on the issue, on the sidelines of a virtual conference granted to the Al Taraqi Center for Strategic Studies. Abdelilah Benkirane affirmed that it is inconceivable that the borders continue to be closed. "What is preventing us from relaunching the construction of the Arab Maghreb Union (grouping Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia)?"
For him, the ideal would be to let the UN settle the disagreement between the two brotherly countries for a definitive return to peace. He points out that the opening of the borders will help heal the wounds of the past.
