Former Moroccan PM Urges Historic Reconciliation with Algeria, Calls for Border Reopening

Abderrahmane Youssoufi, former Moroccan Prime Minister, also former first secretary of the Union of Socialist Forces (USFP) party, called for a "historic reconciliation with our Algerian brothers" during a conference organized by his party in Oujda, in the northeast of Morocco.
To resume dialogue on the possibility of reopening the borders with Algeria in order to "serve the interests of the two peoples". This is the call of Abderrahmane Youssoufi, former Moroccan Prime Minister. He said he was satisfied with the speech of King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the Green March.
He also recalled that the sovereign had declared that Morocco and Algeria and their leaders are capable of opening a dialogue "without mediation by a third party". According to him, they can together find solutions to all the problems that undermine Moroccan-Algerian relations.
"We are all supposed to participate in the search for [solutions] because of our brotherhood and our common history," Abderrahmane Youssoufi remains convinced.
Since the accession of Morocco and Algeria to independence, relations between the two countries have been marked by a multitude of problems, including the Sand War of 1963, the Sahara War between 1975 and 1991 and the closure of borders in 1994.
