Former Moroccan Official Surrenders After Fleeing Corruption Charges

The former president of the commune of Béni Chiker, in northern Morocco, presented himself to the Royal Gendarmerie. An arrest warrant had been issued against him at the end of last year for mismanagement and abuse of power.
These accusations date back to the period when he was at the head of the commune. He was accused of having taken advantage of his position to obtain illegal benefits and of having mismanaged the finances of the commune. The Court of Appeal of Nador recently confirmed the first instance judgment, sentencing him to one and a half years in prison. This judgment had been rendered in absentia, as he was absent during the trial.
According to local sources, the confirmation of this conviction would have pushed him to surrender to the authorities. He would thus face the accusations against him and serve his prison sentence.
This case had generated upheaval within the commune of Béni Chiker. The accusations highlighted financial and administrative irregularities that had undermined the management of the commune. The former president had been dismissed from his duties at the end of last year, after a decision to suspend him by the competent authorities.
