Former Moroccan Official Sentenced for Impersonating Royal Household Minister in Fraud Scheme

The court of first instance in Rabat handed down its verdict this week, sentencing a man born in 1984 to a five-month prison sentence for attempted fraud.

According to the daily Al Akhbar, the accused had set up a complex system to defraud high-ranking political figures. Posing as an official from the Ministry of the Royal Household, he solicited the help of ministers and parliamentarians for a supposedly needy person.

To do this, the individual would contact government officials by SMS, posing as the needy beneficiary, and ask to meet with these personalities to discuss his case. Several of these people would have been about to fall into the trap and grant an audience to the scammer.

It was when he tried to use the same method with the President of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, that the scammer was unmasked. Alami, having been made aware of suspicious messages sent to his colleagues, reported the situation to the Royal Cabinet. Subsequently, a trap was set for the scammer, who ended up asking for a sum of 300,000 dirhams. He was finally arrested and then convicted.
