Former Moroccan Minister Mohamed Ziane’s Health Deteriorates in Prison, Family Reports

The former Minister of Human Rights and lawyer, Mohamed Ziane, detained in the El Arjat prison in Salé, would suffer from serious health complications due to poor management of his illness.
According to the online media alhayatalyaoumia, based on information provided by the family of the former Rabat Bar Association president, during a weekly visit to the prison on Monday, July 10, it was found that Mr. Ziane was wearing a lumbar belt and had difficulty walking or moving without assistance.
Suffering for a long time from ankylosing spondylitis, a disease that has already caused the loss of vision in one of his eyes and affected his spine, he is now facing a worsening of his health due to his advanced age, 80 years old, and the conditions of detention.
Arrested on November 21, 2022, Mohamed Ziane is currently serving a three-year prison sentence, following the confirmation of his conviction by the Court of Appeal of Rabat.
The former Bar Association president was found guilty of several charges including "contempt of public officials and justice", "insult against a constituted body", "defamation", "adultery", and "sexual harassment". To date, the Moroccan Prison Administration (DGAPR) has not yet responded to concerns about the lawyer’s health condition.
