Former Moroccan Minister Jailed in Public Funds Corruption Case

The president of the commune of Fkih Ben Saleh and deputy of the Popular Movement (MP), Mohamed Moubdii, was incarcerated on Thursday, April 27 for alleged financial crimes. He was arrested along with thirteen other co-defendants, including entrepreneurs who had benefited from the commune’s contracts that he presides over.
The former Minister of the Civil Service is being prosecuted for the misappropriation of public funds, embezzlement of money, criminal conspiracy, among other charges. He and the seven other suspects were placed in pre-trial detention at the Oukacha prison, while six others will be prosecuted while on provisional release and under judicial supervision with the withdrawal of their passports.
The investigating judge decided to prosecute them for alleged financial crimes committed in the management of the commune of Fkih Ben Saleh. The date of their detailed hearing before the investigating judge will be set at a later date.
Furthermore, Mohamed Moubdii, who is also the president of the justice and legislation committee in the first chamber of parliament, announced his resignation from this position on Wednesday morning, following his summons before the Attorney General of the King at the Casablanca Court of Appeal to answer the charges against him. This committee had been the subject of a lively controversy during its election on April 17, 2023.
On Wednesday morning, the Popular Movement had welcomed Mr. Moubdii’s decision to submit his resignation from the said committee, stating that it was closely following this case. For the political party, Mr. Moubdii remains innocent until proven guilty and intends to defend his innocence before the various courts.
