Former Moroccan Minister Arrested in Anti-Corruption Crackdown

After the arrest on Thursday of Mohamed Moubdii, a deputy of the Popular Movement (MP) and former minister, for alleged financial crimes, voices are rising to call on the Moroccan government to strengthen its fight against corruption and illicit enrichment.

Mohamed Moubdii, president of the justice and legislation committee in the first chamber of parliament, was arrested on Thursday for embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds, corruption and misappropriation of funds. Another case of corruption that should alert all those who hold public office. The daily Al Akhbar thinks in particular of "all the parliamentarians and mayors who have crossed the red lines in the management of public funds and state property, believing that they are above the law and immune to any form of accountability".

For the newspaper, "some have begun to no longer believe in the fight against these scourges, which have become, over time, daily corrupt practices", a bitter observation that has led to "general disappointment within society". Worse, corruption is growing, as evidenced by the many officials suspected of financial crimes who nevertheless find themselves in parliament and in the government. This reality calls for a clean-up operation, believes Al Akhbar, which reveals that "some have begun to bequeath ill-gotten gains and the culture of corruption to their wives and children".

"Whoever believes that the fight against this scourge is the business of the authorities and institutions is wrong. This fight must be the business of the whole of society, political parties, the media, mosques, schools, families. The intermediate bodies that produce the political elite remain the most responsible," it concludes.
