Former Moroccan Mayor and Engineers Jailed in Fez Corruption Probe

The former president of the municipality of Moulay Yacoub, Mohamed Laidi, a member of the Istiqlal party, appeared before the Attorney General of the King near the Court of Appeal of Fez, accompanied by six engineers. They are accused of embezzlement of public funds.
This decision follows an in-depth investigation by the regional brigade of the judicial police, triggered after the arrest of Laidi, also a former member of parliament for the constituency of Moulay Yacoub, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
The Attorney General ordered the incarceration of Laidi, four engineers and a technician. In parallel, three civil servants were placed under the regime of provisional release. The suspects could be tried directly by the First Instance Chamber specialized in financial crimes, or be referred to the investigating judge for financial crimes of the Court of Appeal of Fez.
The current judicial procedure was initiated after the Attorney General examined the reports and complaints against the former president and his collaborators. These complaints, from civil society actors and human rights defenders, denounce poor management as well as financial and administrative irregularities within the municipality of Moulay Yacoub, in the Fez region.
