Former Moroccan PM Benkirane Files Complaint, 3 Students Jailed for Defamation

Three students were placed in detention at the Salé, El arjat prison, following the complaint filed by the former Head of Government, Abdelilah Benkirane. They are being prosecuted for defamation and insult.
After placing them in custody, the Public Prosecutor’s Office decided to bring the 3 students before the courts on Thursday, August 22, 2019. The incident occurred just before Eid al-Adha.
According to the Hespress website, one of the 3 accused had contacted the former Head of the Executive to ask him for financial assistance. The latter, responding favorably to his request, had given him a 200 dirham bill.
The second student had wanted to do the same, this time asking Benkirane to return a legal file that he had previously given him. But the former Secretary General of the PJD had hung up on him.
The student, who had not appreciated the reaction of the former Prime Minister, had ended up writing an insulting SMS, prompting Benkirane to file a complaint for defamation.
