Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak Confirmed in Morocco’s Fquih Ben Salah Region

Cases of foot-and-mouth disease have just been confirmed in the locality of Ouled Sidi Chennane, in the Fquih Ben Salah region, announces the National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA).
"To prevent any risk of spread, control measures have been taken by the provincial veterinary service of Fquih Ben Saleh in collaboration with the local authorities, at the level of the infected farm, in accordance with the regulations in force," ONSSA said, specifying that this includes "the slaughter and destruction of all cattle and sheep on the farm, the cleaning and disinfection of the farm, including the premises and equipment, the obligation for people entering and leaving the farm to comply with biosecurity measures and the vaccination of all cattle around the outbreak."
ONSSA has also decided to temporarily close "the gathering places for cattle and sheep within the perimeter of the farm concerned, to launch investigations into the origin and traceability of the cattle affected by the disease, to launch an epidemiological survey of the herd at the local level and to strengthen the health monitoring of the herd at the national level."
Not transmissible to humans, this disease can be transmitted by air and by contact between animals, the office said.
