Moroccan Farmers Protest Algerian Land Ban in Figuig Border Dispute

The farmers in the province of Figuig affected by Algeria’s decision to prohibit them from exploiting their lands are still angry. This week, they demonstrated again to express their discontent and called on the Moroccan authorities to urgently resolve the problem.

The farmers of Arja in the Ksar Ouled Slimane area, bordering Algeria, supported by several elected officials, members of associations and other inhabitants of the region, strongly condemned Algeria’s decision, reports the daily Al Massae.

The farmers also called on the Moroccan authorities to take responsibility and urgently resolve this problem, recalling that these lands are not covered by the June 15, 1972 convention on the demarcation of bilateral borders, raised by the Algerian army to support its decision.

The Algerian army claims these lands that would fall under Algerian territory. Yet these lands have been exploited for several years by these Moroccan farmers. This leads some observers to affirm that Algeria is only provoking Morocco.
