Fiancé of French Lawyer Jailed for Insulting Casablanca Attorney

Accused of insulting a lawyer registered with the Casablanca bar, Mohamed Amine Naguib, the fiancé of the French lawyer victim of an alleged rape during a private party, was sentenced to four months in prison by the correctional chamber near the Casablanca Court of Appeal.

The Court of First Instance in Casablanca had sentenced the fiancé of the French lawyer to three months in prison for insulting the lawyer and for violating the secrecy of the investigation. On the order of the competent prosecutor’s office, the accused was placed in detention at the Aïn Sebaâ prison, after the leak of a telephone recording between him and another person, containing insulting remarks and accusations against the lawyer.

The Casablanca Bar Association filed a complaint against him, leading to his arrest at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca upon his return from Paris, and then his conviction at first instance to three months in prison. Last Friday, during the appeal hearing, the defense of the accused asked the court to summon the person who had disseminated the audio recording on social networks on the basis of which his client had been arrested.

"The accusation against my client was fabricated in order to put pressure on him in this case, which is still under investigation by the investigating judge," argued the accused’s lawyer, adding that the latter "preferred prison rather than yielding to these maneuvers
