Fez Pushes for High-Speed Rail and Tramway to Boost Transport Infrastructure

Aziz El Lebbar, the deputy and president of the Regional Tourism Council of the Fez-Meknes region, calls for the creation of a tramway line and a high-speed train (TGV) in the city of Fez.
During an oral question session in the House of Representatives, Lebbar asked the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, to connect Fez to the high-speed train (TGV) network and improve urban mobility in the city by creating a tramway line and a high-level bus service (BHNS).
The deputy also invited the minister to accelerate the construction of the Fez-Tangier road via Ouezzane, arguing that the inhabitants of the Fez-Meknes region feel disadvantaged compared to other cities like Rabat and Casablanca. "What can we do for the Africa Cup and the World Cup?" he asked the minister.
In response, Minister Abdeljalil said that the extension of the high-speed train line from Kenitra to Marrakech does take the Fez region into account, but noted that previous studies had revealed difficulties in electrifying the city’s railway line.
However, a new study is underway for the connection of Fez to the new rail network, the minister assured, recalling that the regional councils are now associated and involved in the preparation of mobility programs at the local level.
