Fez Faces Health Crisis as Butchers Turn to Illegal Slaughterhouses Over Tax Hike

A new tax imposed by the mayor of Fez would not have pleased the butchers of the city who, for a large part, have turned to clandestine slaughterhouses, thus greatly increasing the health risk.
According to the newspaper Al Akhbar, the PJD mayor of Fez, Driss El Azami El Idrissi, would have unwittingly triggered a chaotic situation in Fez. By increasing the slaughter tax, the butchers of the city have turned to clandestine slaughterhouses. And a large part of the meat sold in Fez now comes from there.
And it’s not just the slaughter, but also the transport of this meat, which is apparently carried out without regard for basic hygiene rules, thus creating a real danger that could seriously impact the health of unsuspecting consumers.
The authorities have even seized hundreds of kilograms of red meat that does not meet the required sanitary conditions. The case began when the police arrested, in December, a man transporting a slaughtered cow... on a tricycle. This case, according to Le360: "lifted the veil on a whole secret organization specializing in the illegal trafficking of meat."
