Ferry Prices Surge for Moroccan Diaspora’s Summer Return, Sparking Concerns

The price of ferry tickets leaving Spanish ports to the port of Tanger-Med has increased at the start of the summer season when many Moroccans in Europe use this channel to return to Morocco. The Moroccan authorities fear a protest from the latter.
This increase in the price of ferry tickets between Spain and Morocco, particularly between Tarifa and Tangier, is not explained, especially since fuel prices have fallen this year, reports the daily Al Akhbar, also noting the problem of foreign companies that are taking advantage of the absence of a Moroccan fleet this season on these lines to capture market share.
The situation worries the authorities, who fear a protest from Moroccans in Europe, forced to spend more to reach Morocco. Parliamentarians have questioned the government about this increase in ferry ticket prices between Spain and Morocco, during the Marhaba Operation.
The Moroccan state is also a loser in this situation described as "catastrophic" by some sources, with foreign companies taking the lion’s share. The same sources blame the sector’s officials for lacking firmness towards these companies during the negotiations.
