Feeling of insecurity in Morocco: a gap with official statistics?

In Morocco, crime in all its forms is under control, assures the Ministry of the Interior in a recent report.

The security situation in Morocco is "normal and under control", the Ministry of the Interior said in its activity report, noting that 641,900 cases of crimes and offenses were recorded during the first seven months of this year. Crimes against persons and property account for nearly 47% of the total number of cases recorded nationwide. The report also indicates that crime is more concentrated in urban areas (69% of crimes and offenses) than in rural areas (31%).

Thanks to the efforts of local authorities and police services, 91% of the cases have been resolved, leading to the arrest and prosecution before the courts of 471,550 people, including minors (4%). Despite these encouraging efforts, Moroccans continue to feel insecure, the Ministry of the Interior notes, stressing that this feeling of insecurity expressed by citizens "does not always correspond to the reality of crime, because the exaggeration that accompanies the perpetration of certain ordinary crimes, the proliferation of rumors and the way these crimes are treated by certain media contribute to raising the level of this feeling without it being supported by objective data".

The police have conducted and continue to conduct a relentless fight against the carrying of bladed weapons threatening security, the trafficking of hallucinogenic substances and drugs, muggings in public spaces, and crimes committed near school establishments. Also, the fight has been relentless against new forms of drugs such as "boufa" or "crack". Between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2024, "about 780 cases related to the drug ’boufa’, leading to the arrest of more than a thousand people and the seizure of more than 13.9 kilograms of this drug" were recorded.
