Fatima-Zahra Mansouri Poised for Historic Return as Marrakech Mayor

Fatima-Zahra Mansouri, the first woman mayor of Marrakech, could regain her mayoral seat. Victorious in the recent legislative, municipal and regional elections, her political party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), is conducting negotiations with the National Rally of Independents (RNI) and the Istiqlal Party (PI).
Following the results of the municipal, regional and legislative elections, Fatima-Zahra Mansouri is the favorite to become mayor of Marrakech, her hometown. She had already held this position between 2009 and 2015. Her party, the PAM, performed well on the evening of September 8 last. In total, 40 seats were obtained - in the five districts of Menara, Gueliz, Medina, Sidi Youssef Ben Ali and Nakhil - out of 179. At the level of Marrakech-city, the Tractor party won ten seats, followed by the RNI (6) and the Istiqlal Party (4).
In Gueliz, the Tractor and the Balance each obtained 6 seats. As for the Dove party, the Constitutional Union (UC) and the Labor Party (PT), each of them came out with four seats. At the same district level, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), which led the city during the last term, won four seats. In the Mechouar-Kasbah constituency, the PAM obtained a majority of 11 seats.
Buoyed by these results, Fatima-Zahra Mansouri, president of the PAM national council, is negotiating an alliance with the RNI and the Istiqlal Party (PI) to regain her mayoral seat in the ochre city, for a new six-year term (2021-2027), reports the Arabic daily Al Akhbar. She will thus have the opportunity to carry out the structural projects she was leading in the city before her ouster.
