Family Demands Judicial Probe into Moroccan Doctor's Suicide at University Hospital

The suicide of Yassine Rachid, a young resident doctor at the Casablanca University Hospital, has sparked a wave of reactions in Morocco. The Ministry of Health has ordered an internal investigation at the University Hospital, but the family of the deceased demands the opening of a judicial investigation to shed light on the matter.

The family of Yassine Rachid is calling for the opening of a judicial investigation to shed full light on his suicide. It does not expect anything from the central commission ordered by the Ministry of Health at the University Hospital to conduct an internal investigation.

In a statement, it announced that all necessary administrative and judicial procedures will be taken to prosecute the person responsible for the young doctor’s death. According to the family, Yassine would have suffered from pressures and humiliations during his lifetime and would also have been a victim of unjustified injustices and sanctions.

In a joint statement, the National Commission of Physicians, Pharmacists and Dentists and the National Commission of Resident and Intern Physicians of Morocco denounced "intimidating and provocative practices experienced by medical students, interns and residents, in their workplace and training," leading some to "serious and dangerous psychological and physical complications."

The two commissions announced a series of protest actions, including the organization of a sit-in in all university hospitals in the kingdom and the wearing of black armbands. They confirm having urgently informed the Ministries of Health and Higher Education as well as the officials of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Hassan II University so that such situations do not recur.
