Family of Adil, Teen Killed in Brussels Police Chase, Calls for Peace Amid Unrest
Monday 13 April 2020, by
In a video broadcast by RTBF, the father of the young deceased, Mohamed Larbi Charrot, expressed his and the family’s wish to mourn Adil. While inviting the rioters to wisdom and confinement, the father believes that these riots will not be able to bring his son back. "We call for calm here. We are against violence. We love our son and we want to mourn in peace," explained the family man.
Following him, Jamal Allachi, a family member, agrees and recalls that the family wants to live through these difficult times in the best possible conditions. "If people really want to help Adil, let them do like his parents: let them stay calm," he added. Condemning the outburst in this period of confinement, he called on young people to stay at home.
For the mayor of Anderlecht, the municipal authorities and the police are all affected by the death of the young man. He also supported the fact that Adil’s family declined any responsibility in the calls for gathering. For Fabrice Cumps, the people who started throwing projectiles at the police certainly did not come to pay tribute to the victim.
In Anderlecht, traces of violence are still visible, after an afternoon of riots and a tense night. Material damage was recorded: five cars burned and a police station in ruins. On the rioters’ side, 57 people were arrested. "Based on the images in our possession, we were able to attribute the acts they are accused of. We will both build a judicial file and a civil file. We will ask them to reimburse the damage they have caused," added the municipal authority.
For now, the investigation continues, even if the weapon stolen from the police van has not yet been found.
