Facebook Accused of Selling 16 Million Moroccan Users’ Data to Companies
The social network Facebook has sold the data of its users, including Moroccans, to several Moroccan and international companies. This number is estimated at around 16 million.
Relying on an investigation conducted by the Daily Mail newspaper, the daily Al Massae claims that personal data has been sold by Facebook to telecommunications, telephony or advertising companies.
Morocco is not the only one affected by these sales, the Daily Mail citing at least a hundred companies from about fifty countries that have traded in this data without respecting the privacy of users. Among the information made available to its partners, those relating to the habits of users, their friends, the devices used to connect, the cameras or even location information, including their homes.
All the data was intended for these companies to offer even more targeted advertising to network users, which prompted the National Commission for the Control of the Protection of Personal Data (CNDP) to demand that Facebook install servers in Morocco hosting the personal data of Moroccans.
