Exploited Minors: Morocco’s Growing Crisis of Child Beggars and Crime

In Morocco, many minors are exploited by professional beggars. These enslaved children sometimes engage in criminal activities.
Begging continues to grow in Casablanca. The "professional" beggars, mainly "expert" beggar women organized in networks, do not rent minors - generally under 10 years old - to their families to "work", but they turn them into real beggars, into work tools. These are sent to harass passers-by, reports the Arabic-language daily Assabah. They also commit criminal acts, including theft.

The phenomenon negatively impacts the quality of life in Casablanca, but also the city’s attractiveness, particularly among tourists who are numerous to complain on social networks. It is also associated with serious violations of children’s rights.
