Experts Unravel Mystery Behind 673 Orca Attacks on Boats in Gibraltar Strait

Some 673 boats have been subjected to orca attacks in the Strait of Gibraltar, near the Moroccan, Spanish, and Portuguese coasts over the past five years, reveals a study conducted by a group of international experts.
Composed of biologists, marine experts and representatives of the Spanish and Portuguese governments, this group of experts has tried to find an explanation for the strange behavior of orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Cadiz, reports the Finnish media Tieteen Kuvalehti cited by HuffPost.
After analyzing 673 orca attacks that occurred on the Moroccan, Spanish and Portuguese coasts over the past five years, the experts came to the conclusion that the behavior of the orcas is due to a game and "has nothing to do with aggression," explained Alex Zerbini, one of the members of the group of experts, to the Washington Post.
"When orcas play with the rudder, they don’t realize that they can damage it and that this damage affects people. The behavior is more playful than conscious," details the expert, who specifies that most of the attacks are caused by a group of 15 young orcas.
