European MPs Call for EU Sanctions Against Morocco After Expulsion from Western Sahara

Isa Serra (Podemos, Spain), Catarina Martins (Bloco de Esqueda, Portugal) and Jussi Sáramo (Left Alliance, Finland), the three European MPs expelled from the Moroccan Sahara last week, are calling on the European Union to impose sanctions against Morocco.
In letters addressed to the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, the three European MPs have requested to meet each of the officials to inform them of the conditions in which they were blocked at Laâyoune airport, in the Moroccan Sahara, where they had gone to carry out an observation mission on compliance with the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU annulling the fisheries agreements between the EU and Morocco.
The Podemos MP and her two European colleagues claim to have been prevented without valid reason from disembarking the plane on arrival in Laâyoune, and forced to return to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Due to this expulsion, they are calling on the EU authorities to take measures against Morocco which, by acting in this way, has violated their rights as European MPs, as well as international law. As part of their mission in Laâyoune, the European MPs had planned to meet with representatives of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) and Sahrawi associations, reports Europa Press.
