Endangered Addax Antelope Reintroduced to Morocco’s Souss Massa National Park

The Souss Massa National Park has been enriched with 20 heads of addax. This is an operation that is part of the program to rehabilitate the Saharan fauna in Morocco.
The program was set up by the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests. Addax are an endangered species. Their reintroduction into this vast protected area in M’hamid El-Ghizlane is an approach aimed at repopulating the protected areas, the Saharan regions, reports the MAP.
It is a matter of increasing the tourist attractions of the Park and preserving a genetic heritage for the maintenance of the biological diversity of southern Morocco. "The gradual reintroduction of this fauna into its natural habitat began in 2008, through the translocation of groups of addax into the Safia reserve in Dakhla and oryx into the Msissi reserve in Errachidia," said the park director Mohamed El Bekkay.
