US Embassy Denies Plans to Relocate Naval Base from Spain to Morocco

The US embassy in Morocco has stated in a press release that the United States does not intend to transfer its troops and equipment from the naval base in Rota, southern Spain, to the Moroccan base in Ksar Sghir.
"The United States has received no offer from Morocco to move the US naval base from Rota to Ksar Sghir," the statement said in response to the publication by the Spanish media of the information that Morocco had offered the United States its naval base in Ksar Sghir.
"The information that the US Navy’s agreement with Rota will soon expire is inaccurate," the statement added.
In Ksar Sghir, a town halfway between Ceuta and Tangier, the Moroccan navy has its fifth naval base, operational since 2017 and where the multi-mission frigate "FREMM" and three "Sigma" frigates can be moored.
The US base in Rota, established since 1953, has been participating in the NATO ballistic missile defense program since 2013.
