EllaLink Submarine Cable to Connect Morocco in Major Transatlantic Internet Expansion

As part of its deployment from Latin America to Europe, the transatlantic submarine cable EllaLink will cross Morocco. It will connect the main hubs of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza to those of Lisbon, Madrid and Marseille.

The maritime cable, which will likely be put into service next quarter, will support data traffic of over 100 Tbps between Latin America and Europe, particularly between Brazil and Portugal, 30 Tbps between Portugal and Madeira, and 40 Tbps between Portugal and Morocco very soon.

In the process of its extension, EllaLink will also connect Morocco, Madeira, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Guyana and the Canary Islands. The operation to extend this latest generation fiber optic submarine cable, 6,000 km long, cost $30 million, with $25 million financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB).

According to the EllaLink company, the deployment of the cable will make it possible to achieve "an unprecedented level of international connectivity" and reduce latency by 50% in communications between the beneficiary countries of the project.

The project started in 2015 with the Brazilian company Telebras and the Spanish company IslaLink. Abandoned later, it was entrusted in 2017 to Alcatel Submarine Networks, before being taken over the following year by EllaLink. In the future, the network will be connected to the United States, other European countries, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
