Elderly Spanish Woman Fined and Sentenced for Anti-Muslim Hate Speech at Health Center

The Moroccan woman, who filed the complaint, was accompanied at the time of the events by another young woman whom the octogenarian also despised, according to the testimonies of the latter. Both said they would have been satisfied with an "apology, because it was not necessary to go that far. But no one did."

The victim says she lived a "very painful" moment and denounced the racist remarks of the 88-year-old woman. "Here, you don’t have to wear the veil. If you want to wear it, go to your country... Your men or your husbands threaten you not to take off your veil," she said to the Moroccan and her companion, also criticizing the fact that they were being taken care of in the health center.

The prosecution had requested one year in prison and a fine of 1,726 euros against the defendant, a sentence that was reduced after the agreement reached between the defense lawyer and the prosecutor. This agreement implies that the defendant acknowledges the facts, which she did after some reluctance. The octogenarian suffered from hearing problems and was assisted at the bar by her son.
