Elderly Moroccan Drug Lord Surrenders: Linked to Major Cocaine Seizure

A drug baron, originally from the Nador region and actively wanted at the national level, surrendered last Thursday to the Royal Gendarmerie in Rabat. He would be the owner of the cocaine destined for Morocco, seized at the Guerguerat border post in early January 2023.
Accused of international drug trafficking, the suspect, around 80 years old, was transferred to Dakhla where he was placed in pre-trial detention. According to the first elements of the investigation, he is involved in the cocaine traffic to Morocco via the Guerguerat border post where some 363 kilos of cocaine were seized in early January 2023 during a joint operation by the police and customs, reports Al Akhbar.
The two occupants of the vehicle transporting the drugs, aged 40 and 41, were arrested. One of them confessed that the cargo belonged to his brother, residing on a farm near Sidi Kacem. The elements of the Royal Gendarmerie carried out searches in the Kenitra region, conducting searches of a luxury cafe, warehouses and farms belonging to the accused.
The competent prosecutor’s office ordered the opening of a thorough investigation to identify and arrest all the people involved in this international drug trafficking. Several real estate developers, elected officials and politicians in the Gharb region have become cautious after the arrest of the drug baron, fearing a new "Escobar of the Sahara".
