Drought-Stricken Moroccan Farmers Allege Political Parties Exploit Barley Subsidies for Votes

Farmers affected by the drought denounce the political parties’ attempts to distribute the barley subsidy intended for them for electoral purposes. They are calling on local authorities.
While hundreds of small farmers are impatient, the distribution of the barley subsidy is delayed due to the absence of the supervisory commissions and the closure of the services concerned during the confinement period, reports Assabah. In Benslimane, farmers mention another reason: the attempt by the sections of political parties to seize it.
Faced with this situation, they ask that the territorial administration take care of this distribution without the intervention of elected officials. Their wish, they will say, is that the local authorities proceed with an equitable distribution of these vital products by dealing exclusively with merchants and real professionals. According to them, this will preserve the independence of the provincial commissions responsible for distributing the quotas to the municipalities.
Moreover, the distribution of livestock feed as part of the fight against the effects of the drought is a mission assigned to the provincial authorities.
