Drought Crisis: Moroccan Cities Face Overnight Water Cuts as Reservoirs Dwindle

Despite drastic measures, some Moroccan regions are facing severe water shortages. This is the case, for example, in the provinces of El Jadida and Sidi Bennour. Thus, the Autonomous Inter-municipal Authority for the Distribution of Water, Electricity and Liquid Sanitation Management (RADEEJ) warns of the risk of water cuts.
In a statement, RADEEJ explains that this is a difficult but necessary situation. Thus, from midnight to 6 a.m., water supply cuts may occur in order to cope with the drought that has strongly impacted the groundwater level and the filling rate of the dams.
The authority has also taken this measure, in accordance with the circular of the Minister of the Interior, dated July 19, 2022, relating to the management of water resources, in which Abdelouafi Laftit called for taking the necessary measures to ensure rational management of water resources. Formal bans have been issued against water wastage under penalty of heavy fines.
