Donkey Meat Scandal Shocks Meknes as Authorities Launch Investigation

Remains of a donkey, including its head, were discovered on Saturday in El Fakharine, near Meknes. The local authorities have opened an investigation. The populations, on the other hand, express their indignation in the face of this phenomenon which is becoming recurrent.
According to several comments shared on social networks, the donkey would have been slaughtered and its meat sold cheaply to managers of certain snacks or to street vendors of sandwiches. This fact is not new, says the daily Assabah, recalling that "other discoveries in the vicinity of the ’Lalla Al Jamila’ cemetery, shook the region just a few months ago".
Civil society activists fear that the meat of these animals, slaughtered clandestinely, is used for the production of sandwiches, ground meat, merguez and sausages served in certain snacks, instead of chicken, turkey or beef.
The authorities as well as the security services of the prefecture of Meknes, are on alert since the discovery of the remains of the donkey, which were recovered by the veterinary services after the usual findings. The investigation, opened by the competent authorities of the Meknes police prefecture, is ongoing.
