Domestic Violence Surges in Morocco: Over Half of Married Women Affected, Report Finds

Despite the many measures, Morocco is still facing the challenge of domestic violence. According to a human rights report, the phenomenon is worrying, especially since the number of cases has increased sharply in 2022.

56% of housewives have been victims of violence from their husbands, revealed the annual report on monitoring violence against Moroccan women and girls, presented by the Azzahrae Forum Network. Nearly half do not take any action against the aggressor, attributing this to fear of the aggressor or fear of breaking up the family.

To prepare the document, the organization relied on a study conducted on a sample of 2,133 housewives and 697 domestic workers, during the period from September 2021 to September 2022. It emerges that 74% of them have suffered this violence within their family. They are mainly victims of psychological violence for 47% of them, followed by economic violence (45%), then physical violence (21%).

According to age groups, the 18 to 35 age group is the most vulnerable to domestic violence, followed by the 35 to 50 age group with a rate of 33%, then the over 50 age group with a rate of 14%, stressing that the husband remains the first responsible for these brutalities, this was declared by 72% of them.

Faced with this alarming situation, the network recommended supporting the centers that devote listening cells for victims of violence and providing shelters for victims in different regions of the Kingdom. The report also calls for a revision of the judicial system to toughen sentences against perpetrators and protect women against all forms of violence.
