Domestic Violence Surges in Morocco During COVID-19 Lockdown, Women’s Rights Group Reports

541 urgent acts of domestic violence were recorded by the League of Women’s Rights during the month of confinement. Of a psychological nature, these attacks require the implementation of urgent measures to protect the spouse.
The league stated that, in the period from March 16 to April 24, psychological attacks accounted for 48.2% of reported cases, followed by economic violence with 33%, physical torture and sexual intimidation.
This situation poses a real problem for the members of the women’s league, who deplore the lack of sufficient reception centers to accommodate the victims and the impossibility of traveling between cities during the confinement period.
In a statement to the press, Samira Mouhiya, a member of the federation, suggested that the public prosecutor’s office establish the procedure for the systematic removal of the violent spouse, and grant the marital home to the wife and her children by right.
